Coos Bay (KMTR) - A classroom on wheels will be rolling through Coos County soon.  The new mobile welding lab arrived on the Southwestern Oregon Community College campus just before winter break.  A high-tech classroom for eight sits in the front of the lab; students can hook up laptops and view projections there.  In the back: four welding stations.  Students will also have access to a robotic welder, and a virtual welding trainer.  The trainer allows beginners to develop skills without the cost of using materials.

The mobile lab will be used mainly to support training programs in local industry and high schools.  It should be out on the road in a couple weeks.

The school purchased the lab through a large grant from the Department of Labor.  The grant money also allows instructors to host free short-term training seminars for welders looking to brush up on their skills.  To sign up, contact the Community Education department at (541) 888-7328.
